  • Equipment: One of the best things to do is to purchase a great camera. There is a perception that people need to have the best of the best camera to get great images. The fact is people can snap great photos with a cheaper priced camera if they have the knowledge of light and understanding of the composition.

  •  Avoiding Camera Shake: Next issue that photographers face is that of blurry images. This happens because of the camera shake. If people know how to hold the camera properly, this can be avoided. Another reason for blurry pictures is the low shutter speed. Low shutter speed may blur the image. Using a tripod is a good way to avoid camera shake.

  •  Light: Even if you know the camera settings, if you do not have an understanding of light you will not be able to take great pictures. The ability to mix all forms of light is essential to get a great photo. A change in angle to the sun may change the image to a great extent.

  •  The Exposure Triangle: The exposure triangle is a term for the three ways in which the camera sensor receives light.  They are as follows:  a) Aperture: The aperture is a term used to describe how open or closed the lens is. More light can enter if the aperture is more open and less light can enter if the aperture is less open.  b) ISO: This is how sensitive the camera is to the light. Higher ISO’s are preferred in dark light.  c) Shutter Speed: This refers to the speed of the shutter. The shutter acts as a curtain. If the shutter speed is slow more light will enter. However, there may be issues as the shutter speed impacts the ability to freeze motion. A moving subject can be captured with faster shutter speed and slower shutter speed will blur the image.

  •  Composition & The Rule of Thirds: Real photographers can feel whether the photograph was taken by an amateur or by an experienced. Amateurs do not have much knowledge about the composition of the image. There are many theories of how a shot can be composed. The most popular theory is the rule of thirds. That is to mentally divide the image into thirds using two vertical lines and two horizontal lines and the place the photos into the regions near the intersection.

  •   Change perspective: Our natural viewpoint is the straight-on from the eye level. Most people try to snap an object from this viewpoint. Shoot from a different vantage point to get some variety. By changing the elevation, distance or angle you may get a better photo.

  • Post-Processing is essential: This is one of the important phases in photography. Even a natural photographer needs to post-process their photos. Cameras are physical devices with limitations and post-processing helps to cover this gap.
