Top 8 Dishes of Goa You Should Treat Your Taste Buds

Perhaps a tropical climate has something to do with delicious food.

There is no other reason why Goa, probably the smallest state in India, has all this kind of attention. Leave alone the nightlife and incredible views, locals in this place have amazing cuisine styles. Nothing can be compared to the cultural food in this part of India.

Whether you go to the South or North of Goa, no one compromises on quality of food.  The fact that it is within the tropics, the locals have access to a variety of natural condiments and spices that you attribute to most of the repeat visits to the state.

Coconut, fish, vegetables, Seafood, meat, and rice are the most common ingredients for the Goan cuisine styles. Kokum is a distinguishing addition to food in Goa. It is used both as a vegetable and fruit.

I must admit it was difficult to come up with this list. There is no way to compare dishes in Goa; they are all unique with different tastes. Also, everyone has their preferences. Here are some of the best dishes I could not let them to slip by;

Goan Fish curry

fish curry

The sight of this curry alone will trigger your hormones. It has a delicious look and its taste is not anywhere near disappointing. It is best served with steamed rice. While fish curry can be mentioned as one, the Goan locals do not generalize anything.

Multiple varieties of fish are used in preparing the curry; it can be mackerel, Pomfret, or shark fish among others. This means a different taste depending on the fish. It is ready after hours. ( Read 20 Best Beaches To Visit In Goa and  Where to enjoy the nightlife in Goa )

Prawn Balchao

prawn curry

Let’s start with the surprising part, the delicacy can be stored for more than a month without any artificial preservatives. It is a combination of pickle blend of ingredients mixed with special spirit produced traditionally in Goa.

The dish is popularly served with boiled rice or bread, culturally known as “pav.” Most people confuse prawn balchao with prawn tickle; they have the same appearance on the plate but the flavor and taste are completely different.

 Fish Recheado

Goa will surprise you with a crispy and brown fish served with salad. The dish is prepared by stuffing recheado paste into Pomfret and fried with onions. The golden brown color is the focus on the experts in Goa.

In this part of India, it is not just about the taste and flavor but also the appearance on the plate. “Recheado” is a Portuguese word to mean stuffed. Make sure you taste this when you visit Goa next.

Chicken Xacuti

There are millions of ways chicken is prepared in Goa but most people go for Xacuti. It is best described when it is on your table because of the multiple spices. It is the most famous chicken dish in India with its origin in Goa.

While the spices are like the Punjabi curry powder components as well as the same elements used in Garam masala, Xacuti remains unique. The chicken is seasoned with poppy seeds and star anise.

Chicken cafreal

Whenever you are in Goa, make sure you ask for this chicken delicacy. It will be worth the trekking to a specific restaurant for this dish. It is a blend of Portuguese and Goan cuisine.

Besides the careful selection of pieces, the green spicy taste together with the artificial aroma from spices makes it a popular dish in Goa.

Pork Sorpotel

It is a common dish in all Catholic homes, especially during Christmas. The preparation style and whole inspiration are from Portuguese culture. It is served after the third or fourth day.

After the first day, it is warmed for a few minutes every day till the fourth day when it is ready for serving.

 Mussel Rawa Fry

Snacks in Goa cannot be compared to any other unhealthy foods around the world. It is a crispy dish seasoned with alcohol. The inside is tender and delicious. The outside is crispy.

While you can eat it directly after deep fry to feel the rawa butter, most of the locals prefer to add green chutney or tomato Ketchup for a more tasty bite. What a snack.

Caldeirada

Goa is closely linked to Portuguese culture hence inspiration of some of the unique cuisine styles. Caldeirada is one of the Portuguese inspired fish stews, which is a combination of several fish.

You don’t have to taste each fish differently; it is all in one plate. If you love variety in seafood, you will find ultimate joy and experience with this Goan dish. It is best served with Portuguese rolls.

7-Eleven Thailand: Why I like it ?

If you have visited Thailand, the most widely seen convenience store is the 7-Eleven. The first 7-Eleven started in Bangkok way back in 1989. Since then the  US-based store chain has grown to around 10,000 outlets. Whether you want a sip of hot coffee or you want to buy some household items you will find it in a 7-Eleven.  Although most 7-Eleven’s are located in Bangkok, you will find a 7-Eleven even on a remote island.

7-Eleven Thailand
7-Eleven Thailand

The success of 7-Eleven in Thailand is unprecedented. Some of the things I liked about 7-Eleven Thailand are as follows:

Firstly, 7-Eleven has great product quality. The quality of almost everything in the stores can be rated as good. The food never caused any problems. Also, products like stationery, beauty, beverages were of decent quality.  That is something I like about 7-Eleven.

Secondly, 7-Eleven stores are open 24*7. You can wake up in the middle of the night and go to a nearby 7-Eleven to have something. During my stay friend and I used to walk down to a 7-Eleven around 12.30  midnight.

Thirdly,  7-Eleven  has great product variety.

Bread and butter, ice creams, beer (yes even beer is available), snacks, grilled sandwich, Japanese Konbini snacks, dumplings, etc are readily available.

In addition, you will find ready meals in small boxes which can be instantly microwaved. Ready meals include fried rice chicken, chicken spaghetti, Korean fried rice, Chicken Teriyaki rice, Thai omelet rice, etc.

Another delicious food available at 7-Eleven is the Mama Noodles. One of the most popular Mama Noodle is Green Curry Mama Noodles.

Further, you will get an amazing array of cool beverages like Coke, Pepsi, Cold Coffee, Hot Coffee, and many more flavored drinks. For example, Chrysanthemum flavored drink was my favorite.

The toiletries and day to day use products like a comb, nail cutter, toilet cleaners, rain jackets, beauty creams, toothpaste, etc are also available in 7-Eleven. The list of products keeps growing day by day. There are a few 7-Elevens where you will get premium products at non-premium prices.

Fourthly,  7-Eleven stuff is well trained. Most of the 7-Eleven stuff is very attentive and could process the order in minutes. Even at odd times like midnight and wee hours of the morning, the 7-Eleven stuff remains active. I was delighted to see the professionalism the stuff displayed every time I used to visit the stores.

Fifthly, 7-Eleven products are decently priced. If you want to have a decent quality quick meal go to 7-Eleven. If you want to have a quick snack grab some street food. And if you want great quality and price is not a concern go to a fine dining restaurant. What I like about 7-Eleven is the pricing of it’s the products. They are not cheap, they are not expensive. They are priced decently.

Finally, 7-Eleven products are consistently similar across its stores. It doesn’t matter whether you buy from a 7-Eleven in Bangkok or a 7-Eleven in Phuket you will get the same product quality. I think this is something that has been achieved through practice.

If you are in Bangkok you will definitely find a 7-Eleven near to your hotel (maybe at 5-10 minutes walking distance).  We cannot imagine life in Thailand without 7-Eleven convenience stores.  Tourists, as well as citizens of Thailand, rely on 7-Eleven in a day to day basis so much so that it is not just a brand it is a phenomenon.

Is it safe to eat Thai street food ?

Thailand ranks among the top countries in the world when it comes to street food. I have traveled the entire country and I personally like Thai street food. But hey! You have to exercise caution while eating street food in Thailand.

What is Thai street food?

Thai street food consist of barbecued (chicken, pork, fish), fried rice, papaya salad, and all other Thai dishes. If you are fruit lover you may find vendors selling papaya, guava, mango, water melon etc.

Why people eat Thai street food?

One of the main reasons people love eating Thai street food is it’s affordability. Thai street food is really cheap. Also,Thai food is freshly prepared and served every day.

What are the tips for eating ?

Thailand’s street food market is very diverse and very chaotic. There are tons of street food vendors. And frankly speaking not all vendors are great.

Here are some tips for eating Thai street food.

1. Look out for long lines.

If a notice an empty food stall, there may be a reason why it’s empty. A cart that is unhygienic and makes people sick may not be filled with customers. Therefore, look for long lines.

Long lines in a street food shop does imply that the shop has satisfied customers. Also, see that the lines have more Thai’s than foreigners. It’s good to avoid shops with no customers.

2. Eat freshly cooked food.

If you find someone cooking in front of you, do have that. This is because it’s hot and fresh. Try to avoid pre-cooked food.

3. Eat from vendors that specializes in one type of food.

Some vendors are good at cooking fresh biryani. Some are good at cooking fried rice and some are good at cooking Pad Thai. Eat from these specialists.

4. Use Common Sense

Ask questions like

Is the cooking environment clean?

Is the raw meat kept in  a cooler before cooking?

Does the vendor wash his/her hands after collecting cash ?

Do ingredients look fresh ?

Does the vendor use clean utensils?

You can figure out whether the vendor maintains a decent level of hygiene.

5. Drink Bottled Water.

Bottled water is available in almost all the Family Marts and 7-Eleven’s. Do drink bottled water. Don’t drink tap water.

6. Avoid Oily Food.

Most of the street food vendors do not use refined oil. Therefore, it’s good to avoid oily food. Do eat  if you find some vendor using refined or olive oil.

7. Do have rotis and banana crepes.

We went to a night market in Hua Hin and we were delighted to have rotis and banana crepes. These are some of the nicest vegetarian street food available in Thailand.

8. Don’t eat many dishes at once.

Many tourist make the mistake of eating many dishes at one time. This is one of the reasons for stomach upset. Remember that you are in a foreign location and if you feed many many foreign elements to your stomach it is bound to panic.

Overall Thai street food is safe and clean. To be on your safe side you may follow the above eight rules of eating street food.

If you fall sick ?

Use Oral Rehydration Salts and Activated Charcoal

Little amount of food poisoning can happen if you are in Thailand. Therefore, it’s good to carry oral rehydration salts. Oral rehydration salts will help to keep you hydrated. In addition to oral rehydration salts you can also use activated charcoal tablets to absorb toxins in your stomach. If there is too much pain in the stomach, it is advised to visit a clinic or hospital.  You are most likely to be treated with a saline for immediate relief.

Use a Thai-English Interpreter to communicate your allergies

If you have allergies eating street food in Thailand is something to worry about. Some people are allergic to eggs, peanuts, wheat, milk, and sea food. Therefore, before eating you can ask the vendor whether the food that is prepared contains the items. That’s where your communication skills will be useful.

If you really fall sick you will need to visit doctor. Most doctors in rural areas may not be able to talk to you in English. Therefore, it is better to take a friend or a person who knows both Thai and English. Or you already know a bit of Thai it will help you to communicate with the doctor.
